On the mountain without peak

Saturay, 18.12.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

This Saturday my brother and me decided to go up to the so called Almkogel (2116 m) nearby Hinterstoder. We started from the guest house Baumschlagerreith (724 m) and tried to find a way up through a mass of snow. As we were not able to find the right way up we found ourselves lost in the middle of somewhere. However went went up to a altitude of about 1950 m till we decided to go back because of the dangerous snow conditions this day. It was amazing how easily it was to create small snow slides which was alarm signal for us. So going back without peak was definitely the right decision. At home we have seen that we went up to the direction of the Gamsspitz (2057 m).

This has been the last mountaineering tour this year.
Some statistics for 2010: 101611 m of height difference and 302 hours anf 23 minutes toal tour length.

Kind regards.

Wicked tour Bösenstein

Saturay, 11.12.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

On Wednesday as we had a public holiday in Austria I decided to climb the highest mountain in the Rottenmanner Tauern, the Gr. Bösenstein (2448 m) near to Rottenmann and Trieben (Styria). Well it was escalating as the road to the start point was blocked. So I had to hike 4-5 km more then I expected in sum 8-10 km more. So the whole tour lats for 9h 25 minutes and I did more then 28 km by feed. However it was a adventure trip and I really enjoyed it. Here are some PICS and of-course a small MOVIE. Also check the LOGBOOK for more details. By the way the 100.000 m of height difference during mountain tours in 2010 were also achieved.

Kind regards.
Carl

Finally one flight!

Sunday, 05.12.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

On Saturday (04.12.2010) I was able to take a flight down from the "Stein am Mandl" nearby Rottenmann (Styria). I went up there with my brother Richard and it was a nice adventure because we didn't got the right way up there. My brother got a little bit frozen on the peak but later it thankfully was getting better. I also made a movie from this nice tour (click camera symbol nearby). HERE are also some pictures. Today (05.12.2010) I also thought I might could get a flight down from the "Schafberg", but because of strong winds from the south I had to carry my glider back to the valley. Well it was a really exiting weekend. By the way, right now I am quiet close to reach the 100.000 m height difference mark this year. If everything will be okay I could reach it next weekend ;).

Over and out.

Snow and wind movie.

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

Well on Saturday (27.11.2010) I had been on the Gr. Pyhrgas, it seems to be a good weather for flying but as I went up to the top of the mountain a really strong wind came up from the south and my plans changed. However I was able to test my new helmet camerea the GoPro Hero. I was really satisfied with the movie quality; well make your own opinion. I uploaded it in HD quality which is available on my YouTube channel HERE.

Have fun and enjoy.

I can't fly! (Schafberg,...)

Tuesday, 23.11.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

It's really frustrating! Last weekend I was hoping to take a flight down from the Pyhrgas on Saturday, but the warm winds from the south made it impossible. However on Sunday I went up to another mountain, the "Schafberg" and once more these annoying strong winds from the south prevented it to fly down to the valley.

However, this week I will get a new paraglider for testing so I really hope the weather condition on the weekend will be good for flying otherwise this will suck. Next time I will write some details comparing my Nova Ibex 19 with the SKY Antea K2. The technical details of these gliders are quiet different so it will be interesting to see the real glide ratio measured by GPS.

Here are some facts of these gliders:

SKY Antea K2 Nova Ibex 19
Layout surface (m2) 20,94 22,6
Layout span (m) 10,73 10,76
Layout aspect ratio 5,50 5,12
Projected surface (m2) 18,58 19,23
Projected span (m) 8,90 8,3
Projected aspect ratio 4,26 3,61
Number of cells 59 39
Weight of the glider (kg) 3,3 3,8
Take-off load – regular use (kg) 50–65
Take-off load – special use (kg) 50–100 55-110
Trim speed (km/h) 40
Minimum speed (km/h) 26
Maximum speed (km/h) 55
Max. gliding ratio 9.0
Min. sink rate (m/s) 1.1

Rinnkogel and Gr.Pyhrgas

Sunday, 14.11.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

Well because on Friday the weather was quiet shitty I decided to go to the Rinnkogel which is located in Salzburg just nearby the "Postalm". I mad the may up with my brother Richard. We were climbing this mountain several years ago, but we didn't remember anything of this tour. However it was worth visiting this mountain once more. I also have taken my para glider up to the top but the wind came from the south and was quiet strong, which means, carry the bag back to the valley by feed ;).

Here are some PHOTOS from the Rinnkogel.

Today Sunday I decided to climb the Gr. Pyhrgas, by the way it was Nr. 22 in 2010. Because the night before was quit long I started the trip at 9:50 AM which isn't normal for me. It was worth because of the nice weather also if I had been quiet tired.

Here are some PHOTOS of the Gr.Pyhrgas.

I wish you a nice working week.

All the best,

Carl

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

Today me, my father Alois, my brother Richard and some mountain friends of my father went up to the Traunstein. We took the old Naturfreundesteig and also found a new way up to the Naturfreundehütte. It also was a good day for flying, but the fog in the valley was crossing my plan to fly down there.
Here are some PICS.

Gumpeneck

Saturday, 23.10.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

Today I really do not know where to go, so I rode to the "Ennstal" and decided to find a way up to the Gumpeneck. I didn't know the mountain first, I have just seen it and decided to go up there. Because I had no map I have taken ways across the country trough the forest and at least trough snow. It was quiet funny.

Kind regards,

Carl

On Sunday I decided to go up to the Hexenturm nearby Admont. Brunnkogel

Monday, 04.10.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

Today Monday I climbed the Brunnkogel with my cousin Robert. We did the mountain via the Bischofsmütze (unofficial way up) which is already known by a lot of people. From the Brunnkogel where I left a new summit book, because the old one was written out we went down to the Hochleckenkogel. Here we have taken the official direct way back to the "Taferklause" where we started in the morning. We were quiet astonished about all the people hiking around on Mondays ;). As yesterday we had a really great weather.

Saturday, 25.09.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

On Thursday 23.09.2010 I had been on the highest mountain of Austria , the Großglockner. I had a small accident there with my para glider. Luckily no bones were broken but it was really close. The tour itself was really exiting, because I was walking in moonlight up to the mountain. I also wrote a report (only in German) but you definitely will enjoy the pictures.

Updates & Pyhrgas

Sunday, 19.09.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

Yesterday and the day before I started to change all the symbols and graphic signs of the page. Here is an example how these signs changed. First row before, row below after the change. I also tried to simplify these symbols. All new symbols are *.png graphic files, which I dislike before as a browser like IE 5 cannot handle them right. But because the new IE (MS Internet Explorer) and all other browsers are able to show them right I decided to update them.

Furthermore I have been on the Pyhrgas today. As the weather report says good weather for today I expected good flying conditions, but there were too many clowds and the wind was quiet strong so I wendt down by feet.

Saturday, 26.06.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

Becasue I wasn't able to take a flight on Friday, I decided to do another mountaineering tour on saturday. I decided to climb the Gr. Woising via an unofficail way through the "Nesselbachtal" up to the Gr. Woising. The start for this journey is the guest house "Deustches Haus" situated next to the "Almsee" lake. Details can be found here in the logbook. I also wrote a report, but just in german. Because I have geocoded my pictures you can follow the way up to the mountain on the picasa map view. Have fun.

Mountaineering is best!

Wedensday, 16.06.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

As I will do some more mountaineering tours during my next big trip trough south America I do a lot of mountaineering tours right now. So that's why I also updated the mountaineering section of my page to introduce you some of my tours and activities. Here is the direct LINK to the latest trekking logbook. As you can see I combine trekking tours with paragliding quiet often, that's also why I will take my glider through the Andes.

I also changed a few things on my page, also to make it easier for me to update it. For example I am working with the picasa web album which is really nice. That makes it easier for me to put some more pictures on the web. Click the Picture beside to open up the picasa web album from the "Rettenkogel & Bergwerkskogel" trekking tour.

Hope you enjoy the new design too.

So far,

Carl

Paragliding on the Loser.

Thursday, 29.04.2010

Prambachkirchen (Austria)

On Saturday the 24.04.2010 the flight school Salzkammergut had a nice event in Altaussee (Styria- Austria). Here the annual emergency parachute packing which is quiet important for hang glider pilots was done. Because I had enough time before lunch I went up the mountain to make a movie from such a paragliding flight.
You can find the movie right here CLICK on youtube.

By the way, I aslo bought a new travelling bike which is ready to be tested by myself, but concerning my new bike I will give you some more details in a few days. Indeed it is a genouse one too.

Have fun

A life sign.
Saturday, 26.06.2009
Prambachkirchen (Austria)
Well it was quiet long ago that I wroth something and a lot of things had happen. Thats why I will give you a short summary of all happened in the past. I made the Austrian paragliding licence nd also made a lot of flights so far. Its really funny, nothing is better then flying ;). I also had been on a lot of mountains, also if the mountains were quiet often the same like the Pyhrgas, Grimming, and so on. My homepage is also available at www.carl.at, finally I spend some money on that domain name. Well that's all so far. I the next few days I will work on my homepage to improove some things, well because of the new real domain name I feel motivated enough.

Mountaineering season started!
Thursday, 28.02.2008
Prambachkirchen (Austria)
Well the last weekend I started the mountaineering season. On Sunday I was on the "Traunstein" 1691 m and on Sunday I was with my friend Robert on the "Erlakogel" 1575 m. I am sorry that there is no report from the Traunstein, but because I had not made some photos I decided not to write a report. The report for the "Erlakogel is available, but only in German. This is because I still had no time for translation, but if you check out the pictures from this tour you will also see a English translation. CLICK HERE for the album.

I still had no time to write the last report from my tour 2006/07 Autria to Thailand. This is not because I am lazy, it's because I bought a new car these days and I am also looking for a new job so I am too busy to bring the site up to date.

Wish you all the best,

Carl Steiner
New mountaineering section!
Wedneday, 30.01.2008
Prambachkirchen (Austria)
As promised I will update the rest of the page step by step. Because I decided to stop my "Around the world tour" for a longer time, I prepared my mountaineering section. New mountaineering section! Because I will do some more mountaineering tours in 2008 I needed to update this first. Also if I haven't finished my report Nr. 9 from my cycling tour to Thailand in 2006/07. The only problem is, that the new mountaineering page is still in German, but it's a question of 2 or 3 weeks until it will be also available in English. But in the meanwhile you can view the German part with it's pictures. All albums contain pictures with an German as well as an English description.

Enjoy and have fun!
